One of the more surprising restaurants I’ve disc

One of the more surprising restaurants I’ve discovered these last few months is Giaola in Bressi Ranch. I have always driven past and assumed it was just another corporate eatery in a shopping center. Let’s just say we all know what happens when you assume...😉.

Giaola is starting to become one of my go-to spots. I’ve found my favorite dishes (ahem, hello Bolognese Al Forno), my favorite bartenders and waiters and of course, my favorite drinks. They’re Italian Mule is a must!

Giaola Carpaccio
Seared beef. Shaved pecorino. Arugula. Fried capers. Violet mustard. Lemon pepper crème fraiche.

Chicken Parmesan
Fettuccine. Garlic. Basil. Mozzarella. Marinara

Chicken Picata (honestly wasn’t a fan of this dish. The chicken parm was the winner this night).
Fettuccine. Broccolini. Pecorino. Garlic lemon butter caper sauce.

How did I not know Escondido has a good food scene?? What started out as a quest to check out a spot in San Marcos, turned into driving the extra 15 minutes to this gem!

Originally known as the fine dining establishment Vincent’s, the owners had to adapt in the times of COVID-19 since fine dining to-go wasn’t really in demand. This is where The Flying Toad was introduced. They took Vincent’s core values and put a little spin on it to offer more affordable and accessible dining. The Flying Toad has become a great success in Escondido and I for one hope they keep this idea around because I will for sure be back for more!

Rack of Lamb
New Zealand lamb. Potato du jour. Local harvest vegetables. Cherry herb sauce.

Beef Wellington
Revier Ranch filet mignon. Mushroom duxelle. Pate truffled wine sauce. Potatoes du jour. Local harvest vegetables.

Pork Belly Crispy Rice Balls (Arancini)

Hunsaker French Onion Soup

I love how this 1920s restoration turned out at The Roxy in Encinitas! Looking forward to the days when we can properly enjoy this classic ambiance indoors. I can picture it now. Sitting at this trendy bar, charcuterie board in front of me and some live music from local musicians playing in the background. Yes, I realize I am 100% basic.

I’m happy to report that in addition to having a super cute and trendy patio, the food at Casero Taqueria is pretty tasty! I mean, this might have to be thrown in the regular rotation for Taco Tuesday.

Their menu had something for everyone. Appetizers, salads, tacos, burritos, tortas, etc. I liked how the tacos were a la carte so you could try different kinds and you could even make it a full meal by adding rice and beans!

Empanadas
House masa. Oaxaca cheese. Cotija. Guacamole. Chipotle ranch.

Pollo Asado Taco
Chicken thigh. Onions. Cilantro. Guacamole. Salsa verde.

Shrimp Taco (grilled or baja style)
Cilantro slaw. Crema. Salsa fresca.

Torta Ahogada

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more beautiful salad 😍. It sure was tasty too! This soft shell crab salad was one of their specials of the day but trust me, their other dishes are just as vibrant and delicious!

I particularly enjoy Paon for lunch as it’s a little more laid back than their dinner service. We tend to take our time here with a nice bottle of wine and enjoy their covered patio. You feel, even just for a moment, that you’ve been transported to a little bistro in Paris.

Cute new Oceanside restaurant alert! This renovated historical house is incredibly charming with their enclosed sun room and vibrant colors.

We went for lunch and got a couple of flat breads and salads that were decent. I took a peek at their dinner menu and found it to be much more French inspired than their lunch menu so I think I would be more keen to go back for dinner.

I’m looking forward to seeing this spot settle-in and grow with the Oceanside community! I’ll give another update once I’m able to give their dinner menu a try.
